A coronary by-pass operation was performed on a 50 year-old patient four months ago. Surgical site infection occurred in the sternum. Corynebacterium jeikeium (C. jeikeium) was isolated from drainage material. This isolate was resistant to most antibiotics. Teicoplanin was administered for the treatment. The patient died because of mediastinitis, nosocomial pneumonia and congestive heart failure. The case was presented and discussed since it was due to a rare cause of surgical site infection.
